Gordon Myers: A History

Gordon William Myers (born July 13, 1947, in Augusta, Georgia) is a professional wrestling commentator who has also worked in a backstage capacity over the years as well. Myers is currently signed to the American Wrestling Alliance (AWA) where he handles play-by-play duties for the company’s Saturday Night Wrestling show as well as all of their supercard events. To his peers, Myers is considered one of the best wrestling announcers in history and is highly revered by fans, wrestlers, and executives alike.

Throughout his youth, Gordon Myers was enthralled with sports and more specifically, sports announcing. He would later tell stories of how he would gather his family around on cold, winter nights and “announce” entire fictional sporting events for them. From the first time he heard a sportscast on the radio, Myers knew how he wanted to spend his life.

During college, Myers got a chance to call some football, baseball, and basketball events for the collegiate teams. He had mixed results and mixed reviews for his commentary and started to lose faith that he’d ever get another chance at it. After graduation in 1968, Myers enlisted with the US Marines and was promptly sent to Vietnam. After the war, Gordon returned home with a newfound desire to get back to his love – announcing.

Around this time in 1973, a new pro wrestling promotion was starting up in Atlanta, Georgia – Southern Championship Wrestling.  Hurting for money, SCW took a chance on Gordon Myers as a backstage announcer. He handled pre and post-match interviews of the wrestlers on their way to and from the ring and did a decent job of it. One night, in Huntsville, Alabama, for a television taping, SCW play-by-play announcer Keith Roberts no-showed due to illness. Myers was given the opportunity on that night and he never gave it back. Roberts soon retired because of his illness which gave Myers the job on a permanent basis in 1975.

Myers remained in the position of lead announcer for SCW for 33 years until SCW went out of business and was purchased by the AWA in 2008. During the years, he briefly held the position of promoter for SCW as well as talent scout for the company.

In 1983, another opportunity came calling for who was widely becoming known as the best announcer in the business when Florida State Wrestling opened their doors. FSW management made Myers an offer he couldn’t refuse and on his “days off” from SCW, he often could be found in the Sunshine State calling all the action for them as well.
